This just became one of my new favorite quotes from a past US president. In a letter to his brother, Dwight D. Eisenhower, a Republican, said this:
"It is quite clear that the Federal government cannot avoid or escape responsibilities which the mass of the people firmly believe should be undertaken by it. The political processes of our country are such that if a rule of reason is not applied in this effort, we will lose everything – even to a possible and drastic change in the Constitution. … Should any political party attempt to abolish Social Security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes you can do these things. … Their number is negligible and they are stupid."

It's crazy to think that American politics is just another duopoly like Coke and Pepsi, but with much higher stakes and somehow even less choice. At least in every state across the US you can choose to drink Coke or Pepsi without having to worry that you'll ask for one and receive the other. Meanwhile about 70% of Americans' votes don't really matter due to gerrymandering.
So get out and vote this year. Not just for President (which despite the duopoly still really matters, especially this election cycle), but in local elections where your vote can actually make a difference and perpetuate change that will eventually make its way to the top.
